ICD-10 codes for anxiety
There’s no single “anxiety” code. The right ICD-10-CM code depends on what the provider actually documented.
The F41 codes
| Code | Official description | Use when the record documents |
|---|---|---|
| F41.9 | Anxiety disorder, unspecified | An anxiety disorder with no specific type named |
| F41.1 | Generalized anxiety disorder | Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) |
| F41.0 | Panic disorder [episodic paroxysmal anxiety] | Panic disorder |
| F41.3 | Other mixed anxiety disorders | A mixed anxiety disorder |
| F41.8 | Other specified anxiety disorders | A specified anxiety disorder not listed above |
F41.9 vs F41.1
F41.9 is the fallback. Use it only when the documentation says “anxiety disorder” without naming the type. If the provider documents generalized anxiety disorder, use F41.1. Payers and auditors generally expect the most specific code the documentation supports.
Related codes
- F43.22 Adjustment disorder with anxiety, when anxiety is a reaction to an identifiable stressor.
- F43.23 Adjustment disorder with mixed anxiety and depressed mood.
- F40.10 Social phobia, unspecified, and the other F40 phobic anxiety codes.
Anxiety caused by a known medical condition and anxiety caused by a substance have their own codes outside F41. Check the ICD-10-CM index and tabular list for those.
